电熔致密刚玉就是以工业氧化铝为主要原料，在三相电弧炉内使γ-AL2O3转变为α-AL2O3而成。γ-AL2O3转变为α-AL2O3是单向的致密刚玉，主晶相大于96%，气孔率小于4%，转化后的体积变化率大约缩小14%左右，因此致密刚玉具有良好的抗酸碱性能，在高温下具有良好的耐磨、抗侵蚀及体积稳定性。
致密刚玉作为**耐火材料，广泛应用于冶金、石化、建材、高温陶瓷、机械等行业，特别是在陶瓷辊道棒、连铸三大件、大型出铁沟等方面有广泛的用途。
